INTRODUCTION
How we simplified running blockchain validators on AWS with Compute Optimizer
Validators play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of a Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchain. They participate in the consensus protocols and are responsible for validating transactions and creating new blocks according to the protocol rules.
Avalanche, as an example, is a decentralized PoS blockchain platform that provides high performance, scalability, and interoperability for decentralized applications (dApps) and enterprise blockchain solutions. An Avalanche validator node ensures the security and reliability of the network and maintains Avalanche consensus.
THE CHALLENGE
A need for lower costs, without compromising on reliability and security.
Running blockchain validators can be quite expensive. Specific hardware and infrastructure requirements need to be met when renting servers or running on dedicated hosts with sufficient reliability and uptime, including enough storage to maintain a copy of the blockchain and transaction data, stable and fast network connections to communicate and stay synchronized with other network participants, etc. Compute Optimizer can help you to cut your cost in half with the same set of infrastructure and still achieve similar reliability and uptime.
EXPERIMENT AND RESULTS
Launching Blockchain Validator With Compute Optimizer on AWS
Cost Reduction
After using Compute Optimizer, the cost of running avalanche validators on AWS was reduced by 60.3%. The total percentage of time spent on the spot instances reached 94.4%.
Reliability
Running 19 containers for 54 days using Compute Optimizer without terminations, validators were able to maintain 100% uptime.
Scalability
Compute Optimizer helped manage the underlying infrastructures. With Compute Optimizer’s scheduler enabled, it could add or remove containers as needed.
